Welcome

The Social Interactions Project is a scientific research programme investigating the psychology of first impressions and their consequences. Jointly funded by the ESRC and MRC, the project is based at the Department of Psychology of the University of Glasgow, and brings together over 30 international scientists, students and support staff from the disciplines of cognition, neuroscience and computing.

Overview

Human beings are social animals, and society is increasingly interconnected. With population on the rise and telecommunications booming, it is common to rack up hundreds of social encounters in a single day. We are seemingly so adept at sizing each other up, and adjusting our behaviour to fit, that we breeze through these encounters without a second thought. Yet our smooth running requires us to grasp complex situations in the blink of an eye. Is this person to be trusted? Are these partners compatible? How our brains deliver this service is one of the great mysteries of the mind, but recent advances in brain science have brought key questions into the lab for the first time.
